A two-story house with light horizontal siding and a covered front porch, fronted by a concrete walkway and a lawn with running sprinklers, surrounded by leafy trees and shrubs.

Sizing a mini-split for a house in Graham County starts with what the compressor will actually be asked to do each year. Homes in Graham County, KS run cooling about four months a year, from June through September. The condenser fan and contactor cycle every time the unit starts and stops, and a system that is undersized for the actual load runs longer per cycle, which accelerates wear on those parts. A contractor who skips a proper load calculation here installs a unit that the season will stress from its first summer.

Ductwork and electrical panels in much of this county's housing were put in for systems that predate what is sold today. Half the homes in Graham County, Kansas were built in 1957 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A mini-split draws from whatever service that original build left behind, and in stock this old the panel is often where the job stalls. A contractor has to open the breaker box and check what capacity is actually there before a unit can be specified.

What a Mini-split Consists of and Where Each Piece Goes

Isometric illustration of a cutaway house showing two wall-mounted indoor air conditioning units connected by a line to an outdoor condenser unit beside the building, with a sofa and bed inside.

The indoor air handler mounts high on an interior wall in the room being conditioned, and it is the piece a homeowner sees every day. The outdoor unit sits on the ground or on a bracket outside the house and holds the compressor and condenser coil. Together they make up the two main bodies of the system.

A refrigerant line set runs through a small opening in the wall to connect the two units, and a condensate drain line carries moisture from the indoor handler to the outside. A dedicated electrical disconnect is mounted near the outdoor unit to give the contractor safe access to the power supply during the work.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines exactly how each piece is positioned and routed in your home.
