Step 1 of 3: Equipment
Single-story house with tan vinyl siding and a dark shingled hip roof, an exterior air conditioning unit at left, and a mowed grass lawn in front under a clear blue sky.

Sizing a mini-split for this house is the decision a contractor has to get right before anything else is quoted or ordered. Homes in Trego County, KS run cooling about four months a year, from June through September. A compressor that is undersized for the house it serves will run long cycles through those months, and the condenser fan and contactor take that load with it. The contractor establishing correct capacity up front is what keeps the system from straining against a load it was never built to meet.

Much of the housing here was wired for loads that predate modern HVAC equipment entirely. Half the homes in Trego County, Kansas were built in 1963 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A mini-split installation runs on a dedicated circuit, and whether the existing panel has room for one without a service upgrade is the question a contractor has to answer before anything else gets priced. In stock this old, that answer shapes the bill more often than the equipment selection does.

What a Mini-split Looks Like Once It's In

Isometric line illustration of a cutaway building interior with two wall-mounted indoor air conditioning units connected by piping to an outdoor condenser unit on the ground outside.

The indoor air handler mounts high on a wall inside the room being served, where it draws in room air and delivers conditioned air back out. The outdoor unit sits on a pad or bracket outside the house and holds the compressor and condenser coil. Each indoor unit is paired to serve a specific space.

A refrigerant line set runs through a small hole in the wall to connect the two units, carrying the lines that link indoor handler to outdoor unit. A condensate drain line exits the indoor unit and runs to a suitable drain point. A dedicated electrical circuit feeds the outdoor unit.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines exactly how each piece is positioned and routed in your home.
