Step 1 of 3: Equipment
A single-story house with light beige vinyl siding, dark gray gabled shingle roof, a small covered front entry, and two windows, fronted by a patchy green and brown lawn with a concrete driveway at right under a clear blue sky.

Sizing a mini-split for a Hodgeman County home starts with what the compressor is actually being asked to do each summer. Homes in Hodgeman County, KS run cooling about four months a year, from June through September. That cooling window is short enough that a unit running the right capacity handles it without pushing the compressor into extended strain. Install an undersized unit, though, and the compressor runs longer cycles and starts more often to keep up, wearing the contactor and refrigerant circuit faster than the calendar would suggest. A contractor establishing the correct load before the equipment goes in is the decision that determines how the system ages.

Electrical service is what decides how a mini-split installation goes in much of Hodgeman County. Half the homes in Hodgeman County, Kansas were built in 1957 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). Houses built in that era were wired for a load that had nothing to do with the equipment a contractor is putting in today, and a service panel sized for that original load often cannot carry a mini-split without an upgrade. The unit itself is straightforward to spec. What takes work is what is already in the walls.

What a Mini-split Involves at Each Part of the System

Isometric cutaway illustration of a two-room house showing two wall-mounted indoor air conditioning units connected by line sets to an outdoor condenser unit on the ground outside.

The indoor air handler mounts high on an interior wall inside the room being served, and it is the piece a homeowner sees every day. The outdoor condenser unit sits outside the house, usually at ground level or on a bracket, and houses the compressor and fan that do the heavy mechanical work.

A refrigerant line set runs between the two units through a small opening in the wall, carrying the fluid that links the indoor and outdoor sides. A condensate drain line exits the indoor unit and routes moisture out of the building, and a dedicated electrical circuit feeds the outdoor unit from the panel.

The drawing shows the general layout of these components, and a licensed contractor determines exactly how each one applies to your house and its conditions.
