Step 1 of 3: Equipment
Single-story house with beige horizontal siding, dark shingled hip roof, a brown front door, three windows, and an air conditioning unit, fronted by a patchy green and dry lawn under a clear sky.

Sizing a mini-split for a Haskell County home starts with what the compressor is actually being asked to do each summer. Homes in Haskell County, KS run cooling about four months a year, from June through September. The compressor starts and stops repeatedly across those months, and the contactor and condenser fan work alongside it the whole time. A unit that is undersized for the house runs longer cycles than it should, and that extra strain accumulates on the compressor over years. A contractor quoting a new install has to establish the right capacity for the structure before anything else gets decided.

A basement with concrete block walls, a gray electrical panel with breakers mounted on the wall, galvanized metal ductwork running along and down the wall, and a wooden shelf holding glass jars and cardboard boxes.

Ductwork and electrical service were designed for what a house needed at the time it was built, and in much of Haskell County that means both were sized around older, lower-draw equipment. Half the homes in Haskell County, Kansas were built in 1973 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A mini-split pulls a different load than what those panels were originally rated for, so an installer has to open the electrical box and check available capacity before the new unit can be placed on a quote. Ductwork is a separate question, but with a ductless system, the panel is where the job starts.

What a Mini-split Installation Puts in Your Home

Isometric illustration of a cutaway single-story house showing two wall-mounted mini-split indoor units connected by line sets to an outdoor condenser beside the building, with a sofa, table and chairs inside.

The indoor air handler mounts high on an interior wall inside the room being conditioned, where it draws in room air and delivers conditioned air back out. The outdoor condenser unit sits on the ground or a pad outside the house, housing the compressor and the components that shed heat to the exterior.

A refrigerant line set runs through a small penetration in the wall to connect the two units, carrying refrigerant between them. A condensate drain line runs from the indoor unit to the outside, and a dedicated electrical circuit feeds the outdoor unit directly from the panel.

The drawing shows the typical layout of these components, and a licensed contractor determines exactly how they are positioned and routed in your home.
