Sizing a mini-split for Wichita County starts with understanding what the compressor is actually being asked to do. Homes in Wichita County, KS run cooling about three months a year, from June through August. A compressor that starts and stops through a full Kansas summer accumulates real wear on the contactor and the condenser fan motor, and a unit installed at the margin of its rated capacity will show that stress sooner than one with room to work. Contractors quoting this job treat refrigerant charge and line-set length as local questions, because an undercharged system fights harder than it should and the heat adds up.

Ductwork is not the binding question for a mini-split install, because the system runs without it. The electrical panel is. Half the homes in Wichita County, Kansas were built in 1966 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). That generation of wiring and service equipment was built around loads considerably lighter than what a modern mini-split demands, and a contractor pricing the job has to establish what the panel can actually deliver before the equipment selection means anything. Where the service is undersized, the panel work becomes part of the job.

What a Mini-split Looks Like Once It's In

Isometric line illustration of a cutaway house showing an interior wall-mounted air conditioning unit connected by a line to an outdoor condenser beside the exterior wall.

The indoor air handler mounts high on an interior wall, usually in the room being conditioned, and delivers treated air directly into that space. The outdoor unit sits on a pad or bracket outside the house and holds the compressor and the condenser coil. These two units are the heart of what a contractor puts in.

A refrigerant line set runs through a small penetration in the wall to connect the indoor and outdoor units, carrying refrigerant between them. A condensate drain line runs from the indoor handler to carry away moisture, and a communication cable ties the two units together so they operate as one system.

The drawing beside this text shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor will determine exactly how the system fits your particular home.
